Chapter 12

"So, did you have a fun time at Dragon Wizard School?" Lewis asked as he fiddled with the Orrery. When Becca didn't answer, he stuck the peg in his mouth and carefully maneuvered the rings into place, back over the etched lines representing the Barrington Mountains.

Becca shuffled in place and waited patiently for Lewis to finish. When she felt the familiar shift in space, she took that as her cue to start up again. "Yeah, actually. I learned a lot more than I expected..."

Lewis cocked a skeptical eyebrow at Becca.

"What?"

"Nothing," Lewis shrugged.

"That sure didn't look like nothing," Becca accused.

"It's just... If you had a good time, why do you sound like someone kicked your puppy?" Lewis asked.

"We didn't really have time to cover anything about my nightmares...." Becca admitted, shaking her head. "Plus, I feel like we barely scratched the surface of things I could learn while there."

Lewis pursed his lips, and for a moment, Becca was worried he was about to say something very stupid. She knew her cousin well enough to know he'd much rather joke about things than face them head-on. After a moment's hesitation, his expression shifted, like he wanted to console Becca instead. Finally, he shook his head and shrugged.

"Not much to do about it, I suppose," he said, forcing a smile.

Becca said nothing as Lewis brushed past her and out the Library. She lagged behind a moment longer, watching the Orrery carefully. Was she waiting for the Piasa to give her another sign, to tell her it was okay for her to go to the Sorcerous Peaks for an extended stay and learn about magic?

She wanted permission, but she didn't know whose approval was more important.

The cool wintry air on the Barrington Mountains wasn't too different from that of the Sorcerous Peaks, and Becca realized that she'd grown accustomed to the chill without noticing it. The cowl around her neck radiated a low level of warmth, reminding her of the aura stored within. She had yet to fully recover the spent power, but some small part of it was steadily returning. It felt good to know that she could increase her pool of magic to pull from in emergencies through such techniques, and she couldn't help but wonder what other skills she'd learn under Recordkeeper's tutelage.

As Becca's sense of time adjusted to her new position in space, she noticed it was early in the afternoon. Maybe a couple minutes after three, if she had to guess. Dragons had a near-perfect sense of time, and though she couldn't see the sun through a haze of clouds, she could still feel the time of day.

Lewis led the way back down the mountain, taking to the air with a beat of his wings. Becca followed close after, amazed at how little the cowl around her neck disrupted the beating of her wings. The knit fabric hugged her shoulders, nearly conforming to the shape of her body. The thick bundle of fabric did very little to shield
